Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are custom-made, thin, translucent porcelain material. Porcelain is used because it has been found that gums tolerate it well. The veneers will be bonded to your front teeth to create a beautiful, attractive smile. Porcelain veneers are an excellent alternative to various other procedures that would be much more painful. Though they are not permanent, they are durable and can provide a dazzling smile for many years. There are a number of reasons why you might want to consider porcelain veneers:
- Stained or discolored teeth
- Broken or chipped teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Teeth that are too large or too small
The process of having veneers placed generally requires two visits to complete. Anesthesia is not required, but may be used if necessary in your particular case. If you have any stain or discoloration, that will be taken care of before the actual procedure. In order to apply veneers, approximately less than half of a millimeter of the original tooth enamel will be removed. This will allow room for it to fit properly and appropriately restore natural tooth function. Your teeth will then be lightly buffed and the surface shaped according to the thickness of the veneer. A mold of your teeth will be taken and you will have the opportunity to choose a shade with the help of Dr. Mattison. Because we want your veneers to match the surrounding teeth as closely as possible, we will ensure that you receive the closest match possible to complement your overall smile. The mold will be sent to a professional lab for completion. While you are waiting, a temporary restoration will be provided that will appear like your natural teeth, allowing you to follow your daily pursuits without worrying about your appearance. On your second visit your teeth will be cleaned with a special liquid to achieve a durable bond. Bonding cement will be placed between the tooth and the veneer and a special light will be applied to harden and set the bond.
Porcelain veneers will generally last from five to ten years and will likely need replaced at some point. They do not require any special care. Continue to follow your normal dental hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing. Although veneers typically resist stains, you most likely will want to avoid food and beverages that may cause stains such as tea, coffee, wine and tobacco.
