Dental Hygiene and Periodontal Health

Following your comprehensive exam, we will take time to evaluate your dental hygiene techniques and periodontal health. We will also assist you in developing proper oral hygiene instructions for home care. Your complete dental care includes regular checkups and professional cleanings but home dental habits play an essential role in your overall oral health. Dr. Mattison and our experienced hygienist will provide information on oral hygiene and suggestions for adjustments or changes to your current home care. A preventative plan will be put into place that will help to preserve your teeth and supporting structures to prevent the onset, progress or recurrence of dental conditions such as periodontal health issues.
Some important factors in developing an effective preventative plan include such things as:
- Brushing and flossing
- Balanced diet
- Regular checkups
- Professional cleanings
Brushing and Flossing
The American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes using a soft-bristled brush. You should replace your toothbrush approximately every three months. Flossing at least once a day will help prevent decay-causing bacteria to develop between teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. It also helps protect the gum line, where periodontal disease can develop.
Balanced Diet
Ensuring that you maintain a balanced diet is important to your dental hygiene plan. The consumption of a lot of soda, sweetened fruit drinks or even sugary snacks can put you at risk for dental caries, or tooth decay. Because of the high consumption of these foods and drinks in today’s society, tooth decay has become the most common childhood disease. Your awareness in reading nutritional labels can go a long way in maintaining a balanced diet, which should include such things as fruits, vegetables, multi-grains and lots of water! Dr. Mattison can answer any questions you may have concerning a proper diet for you and your child.
Checkups and Cleaning
Because regular checkups and routine professional cleanings are such an important element of your oral and periodontal health, our office will ensure that appointments are scheduled appropriately. We recommend visiting us at least twice per year, or more often if required for your particular dental needs.
Periodontal Health
Periodontal health issues occur when the tissues that surround teeth become inflamed or infected. It is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. During your regular checkups part of the exam will include an analysis of your dental hygiene and periodontal health. Though preventative care may help to protect you against this condition, it may still occur. The good news is that it is generally treatable with specialized procedures which you can discuss with Dr. Mattison.
